In September 2007, the Sherrill-Kenwood Fire Department and the KEYS Program joined forces to host the first Michael Sowich Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament was created in memory of State Fire Instructor Michael Sowich, who passed away unexpectedly while attending training at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. His dedication to the fire service and his passion to help others is the true spirit behind the golf tournament each year!
The first outing benefitted Mikey’s wife and daughter, to help them through a very difficult time.
In the years since, the Sowich family has been very involved in the tournament each year, “paying it forward” to help other families in need.
In keeping in the spirit of helping those who serve, the Sowich family would like this year’s event to benefit the Michael Sowich Memorial Scholarship and the Heroes Song project. The scholarship will be given to a deserving high school senior who is pursuing a career in the fire or rescue service. Heroes Song provides music therapy assistance to kids who have a parent in the military, police, fire or EMS services, who is deployed, or has been injured or lost in service to their country or their community. Your support at this year’s event will touch the lives of hundreds of military and emergency worker’s families, who we consider our heroes.
This year’s tournament will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Shamrock Golf & Country Club in Oriskany. Registration is at 9am with shotgun start at 10am.
For those who would like to get a team together to play or become a sponsor, we have enclosed registration and sponsorship information. Registration forms are also available on-line on the Sherrill-Kenwood Fire Department website at www.sherrillfire.org or the KEYS website at www.keysprogram.org.
We are also in need of door prize items to give away to the wonderful teams supporting this event! If you would like to make a donation, please contact us to arrange a time we can pick up the item.
We ask that all donations are in to our office by August 15th, 2010.
